The Regimental umber and name erased , the remaining engraved in sloping capitals “…..Griqualand West L.I”.
An interesting unit to research in itself.
The Griquas were a of mixed origins form a region north of the Orange River. Disturbances arose in early 1878 and rebellious Griqua established themselves in a mountain stronghold. In July a force of Frontier Force of Mounted Police and Colonial volunteers attacked the fortress and drove them out after six hours of fighting. The survivors scattered to a wider areas and successfully defended caves in the Magnet Hills.
