WW2 Japanese Officers Katana - Old Family Blade

The hilt with its original same’ and cord binding , the binding with a very appealing age polish from the countless times it has been handled. The binding with an old family menuki in the form of a crayfish. The brass civil tsuba ( guard) is decorated with a Komainu Lion. The pommel (Kashira) and the collar (Fuschi) are also civil mounts decorated with the paulownia flower. The fullered blade (approx 700 mm ) is unnamed and most certainly an old family blade. The tang has tree holes and heavily rusted. The is some areas of light pitting to the blade. The scabbard ( Saya) is the standard army Showa factory made pattern but in a polished black painted finish instead of the usual army green. Black metal with wooden interior with brass fittings and a single hanger ring. The brass koiguchi ( scabbard mouth) is loose.

NOTE : Im not an expert in Japanese swords I’m the first to admit but for what it’s worth I think this is an old Samuiri period civil blade that has been refurbished in the 1920’s or 1930’s. It has seen servcie during WW2 and was probably fitted with a leather field cover to the scabbard given its well preserved condition.
