WWII Japanese Army Officer Shin Gunto Type 98 Sword - Signed

The standard issue Japanese Army officer’s sword of the Showa period. It has an overall length in the scabbard of approximately 1030mm with a blade length of approximately 700mm. The sword blade is in average rage condition with a couple of small flaws being two small edge knocks and with some tone and staining. It would certainly benefit from a professional clean. The tang shows some relatively minimal surface rust and it has a single mounting hole. The tang bears a signature. The ray skin grip is wrapped in the traditional style with brown fabric, with the wrap showing very little wear. Beneath the wrapping are the standard military menuki of three cherry blossoms. The tsuba guard is the solid gilt style, with relief cherry blossoms and with matching spacers. The all metal standard army Showa period brown painted scabbard paint exhibits some age and wear but retains is original finish. Overall a fair example of what is to expected as found direct from a veteran family.
