A rare trio to Private Frank Edward Ancliff, 6th Italian, Lincolnshire Regiment, who was reported missing in action and presumed killed in action, possibly burnt to death during the attack on chocolate hill, 9 of August 1915

1914/15 Star , British War Medal and Victory Medal. All impressed to “12807 PTE F E ANCLIFF LINC.R) All loose. Extremely fine condion.

The 6th (service battalion) Lincolnshire Regiment landed at “V” Beach Helles 19th of July 1915 and attached to the Royal Naval division Archi Baba front line. Two Suvla 6th of August via “B” Beach and move to Salt Lake area. Ordered forward for the attack on Chocolate Hill 2pm 7th August 1915. The Lincolnshire regiment records show the battalions advance as being absolute parade ground order formation. Arrived at foot of Hills and advanced through the Dublin fusilier‘s. Leading waves being cut down by heavy shrapnel and machine gun fire. Turkish trenches rushed and taken, approximately 84 other ranks killed wounded or missing. Relieved on 8 August into reserve trenches at Lala Baba. Advanced for attack on Ismail igloo on 9 August 1915 but halted at chocolate Hill at 5:15 AM. Came under heavy fire from Scimitar Hill and deployed. It was during this time that the scrub caught fire, and a withdrawal was ordered. The remains of the battalion retired two trenches, but left many wounded behind burning in the scrub.Captain P H Hansen With volunteers made several Judy’s into the fire to rescue the wounded and was awarded the Victoria cross for his heroic actions. The casualties were 391 other ranks, killed or wounded, mini being burned alive in the scrub fire with records, indicating the missing and wounded would never seen again.
