Clifford was born on the 23rd of March 1916 in Adelaide, SA.

Clifford attended the St Leonard’s Public School in Russell Street, Glenelg from 1922 until 1928 and then the Thebarton Technical High School from 1929 until 1932.

On leaving school he gained employment with Holden’s as a youth welder and in 1934 was employed by F. J Wadhams, Brass Finishers in Somerton as a brass moulder.

In May 1939 Clifford played his first game of football for Macclesfield and received best on ground.

At the age of 24, enlisted into the RAAF on the 29th of April 1940 and was allotted the service number 407028. He was posted to No.1 Wireless Air Gunners School at Ballarat (1 WAGS) the following day and 4 weeks later was posted to No.1 Air Observers School at Cootamundra for 4 months.

In September 1940 Clifford announced his engagement to Miss Joan Teresa MCNAMARA of Macclesfield. Joan was the daughter of Thomas Peter MCNAMARA & Catherine Cecelia MCGRATH.

On the 23rd of September he was posted to No.1 Bombing & Gunnery School at Evans Head, NSW.

He embarked from Adelaide on the 3rd of February 1941, disembarking in Egypt on the 24th of March.

On the 18th of June he was posted to No. 24 Squadron.The squadron's main role in North Africa was as a tactical day bomber unit, attacking German and Italian troops, bases and airfields.

Clifford was posted to Maryland AH354 as an Observer and of the 4 air crew he was the only Australian and the others were all South African.

Maryland AH354 of 24 Squadron took off on the 5th of August 1941 to carry out an operational mission near Derna, Cyrenaica. The pilots of the accompanying aircraft reported that AH 354 was caught in 10 searchlights and shot down in flames at 2200 hours on the 5th of August, the aircraft crashing into the sea east of Derna.
