During World War II, the National Emergency Service (NES) in Australia was established to protect civilians on the home front and coordinate responses to potential aerial attacks. Volunteer wardens, nearly half of the NES's 115,418 volunteers, played a key role in this effort, working to maintain air raid precautions and provide support to the public. It was created on 1 February 1939 to provide air raid wardens. The organisation was disbanded six months after the end of the war.
