During World War I, Chaumont, France, served as the General Headquarters (GHQ) for the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) under General John J. Pershing. From September 1, 1917, to July 11, 1919, the AEF directed operations from Chaumont, involving over two million American soldiers.
