WW1 HMAS Sydney /Emden Souvenir Ashtray
WW1 HMAS Sydney /Emden Souvenir Ashtray
A scallop-edged brass souvenir ashtray, made to commemorate the destruction of the German cruiser SMS Emden by HMAS Sydney in 1914. The outside scalloped rim of the ashtray features three cigarette rests, under which are three leg supports. The outside polished edge of each of the legs is engraved in turn, 'HMAS SYDNEY, SANK EMDEN, 1914'. It is thought that the ashtray was made from melted-down salvage from the Emden.
Following the destruction of SMS Emden, a number of souvenir items were produced from items recovered from her wreckage, including these ashtrays.
