British 1796 Heavy Cavalry Troopers Sword
A rare matched regimental sword and scabbard to the 7th Dragoon Guards. Pattern 1796 Heavy Cavalry Troopers Sword by Thomas Gil. 760mm broad straight blade with partial crowned inspectors stamp. The edge with numerous minor edge strikes and overall age tone. The knuckle guard marked “E 26 7DG”. Heavy pitting to the guard and particularly to the back strap of the hilt. The all steel scabbard also with heavy pitting and edge knocks. The scabbard also marked “E 26 7 DG”. Overall yes this isn’t the very best example but these swords are now very rare and highly desirable.
Overall length 1000mm.
The 7th (Princess Royal’s) Dragoon Guards were sent to Ireland in 1796 and remained there during the Napoleonic Wars, taking part in conflicts at Rathangan and Kilbeggan in 1798 where the regiment suffered casualties along with Irish rebels.
