British Boer War Period Hussar Officers Campaign Hat
A very rare private purchase piece of Boer War period British Headgear. Lightweight khaki cotton material without frame marketing it collapsible to fold flat. Fold up sides secured by small horn buttons. The sides anre able to fold down to give a more of a slouch hat appearance. The front peak with a brown leather weather protector covering. Scarlet red piping to the top of the crown. Matching red cap lines laced to the rear allowing a for adjustable size and secured through a brown leather rear short neck flap protecting the back of the head from rubbing on the cap lines. The cap lines terminate in a small oxidized spring clip. Has a Hussar Officers gilt bullion cockade with a long brass slider fitted to the front in the manner as worn on the usual Hussar busby. Silk oilcloth lining with manufacturer label of what looks to be “J and G Ross of Exeter”. This is very hard to read as the label is frayed. There is also on both side of the lining “Anhelion REGd”. Wear to the lining consummate with age. Very good condition and a most interesting piece of British military headgear as worn in India or during the South African War.
