Germany participated in the Boxer Rebellion, an anti-foreign uprising in China between 1899 and 1901. The German Empire was part of the Eight-Nation Alliance, a multinational force that intervened in China to suppress the rebellion and relieve the foreign legations being besieged in Beijing. Germany also established a sphere of influence in the Jiaozhou Bay and Qingdao area, and exerted economic influence on China, which contributed to the unrest leading to the Boxer Rebellion.
