Japan WW2 A Signed Edo Period Army Officers Wakizashi Sword - PART 2
The hilt with its original samurai period civilian styled black braided wrapping over white ray skin same’ and civilian blackened brass Menuki ending a black wooden kashira pommel with no provision for a sword knot. Blackened brass civilian fushi. Voided civilian cast iron tsuba and two copper brass spacers. Plain brass habaki , ricasso. The bright blade with a very faint Hamon line and measures 560mm from tsuba to the blade tip. The tang with one securing hole. The tang signed on both sides named to the maker “Ogomatsu Fujisawa” This reputedly a famous family of sword makers dating to the 1600’s Edo period. More research is certainly needed here. The other side reads “Bright Layer Leaves August Crescent Moon”.
Fitted with a Showa or WW2 wartime brown leather field cover with a single brass hanging ring that easily slides off revealing the black lacquered wooden scabbard. The cover in its usual state of used service wear with no real damage of concern just the usual nicks and scratches. The blade fits perfectly to the scabbard.
The sword in scabbard measures approximately 810mm.
Overall this is a very nice sword, certainly far older than other WW2 swords often encountered on the open market and in lovely condition.
