Citation:
The Fuher and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces has conferred the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross on Oberfeldwebel Morawietz, 13th Company , Grenadier regiment 3.
Oberfeldwebel morawietz, a Platoon commader in the 13th Company pf Grenadier Regiment 3 was to report on 21st september 1944 as forward observer of the Regimental Staff. this he found cut off through the superior strength of the enemy. Acting alone on his own initiative he gathered together 30 men and in spite of strong tank and infantry fire, led them in storming forward in a daring counter attack. in spite of reckless boldness Morawietz had no success in breaking through to the trapped Regimental Staff. Undiscouraged, Oberfeldwebel Morawietz gathered his men ,waited for full darkness to defend and moved to counter attack for the second time. In bitter close combat Oberfeldwebel Morawietz liberated the Regimental leader and his staff from the clutches of the enemy. Through this bold deed of Oberfeldwebel Morawietz, the liberated Regimental leader was able to construct a new line and hinder a deep breakthrough by the Russians. I commend Oberfeldwebel Morawietz with my highest recognition , my thanks and heartiest good luck wishes. i thank the brave men under control of Oberfeldwel Morawietz during the most difficult houe=rs . Your courageous readiness for actin found special resignation for action found special regingition in the conferral of this high award. , Obslt. Kurt Hilgendorff, Commnader Grenadier Regt. 3.
