The 1st Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, played a key role in the final stages of the Sudan Campaign (1898–1899), fighting under Herbert Kitchener to secure the Nile region. They took part in the decisive Battle of Atbara in April 1898 and the Battle of Omdurman in September 1898, key actions that destroyed the Mahdist state.

Battle of Atbara (April 1898): The Camerons were part of the British Brigade, suffering significant casualties (eighteen men, including three officers) during a hard-fought, successful attack on a fortified camp.

Battle of Omdurman (September 1898): They participated in the victory that opened the way to Khartoum, leading to the final occupation of the city and the end of the Mahdist threat.

Final Actions: Following the major battles, elements of the regiment helped secure the region, with some troops involved in the aftermath of the Fashoda Incident and supporting the final pursuit of the Khalifa in 1899.
