German WW1 Prussian Other Ranks M15 Ersatz Pickelhaube
The Ersatz pressed steel (Stahlblech) pickelhaube was a close relation to the Ersatz tin (Eisenblech) pickelhaube, being produced by a similar process. Although there was some differences they are grouped together but are two distinctly different helmets. The Ersatz pressed steel pickelhaube was introduced into service in early 1915 and was intended to afford the wearer a small amount of head protection of which the earlier tin helmet could not provide. A useful characteristic is that it could be painted in a camouflage colours discarding the need for a cloth camouflage cover. This helemt was also seen to be an interim measure to the issue of the M16 steel helmet.
