WW1 British / French Army Interpreters Badge

The WW1 British Army Interpreter's badge features a die-stamped brass or gilded Pharaoh’s (Sphinx) head. Instituted during the Great War, these badges were typically worn on the lower sleeve of the service dress jacket and were often mounted on a coloured felt background (often sky-blue or dark green).

A scarce and very interesting gilded brass Interpreters badge, mounted on its original green cloth backing(mothed) The badge has two prongs to the base on the reverse and a straight bar across the head of the sphinx where the other two prongs would have been attached. Excellent quality badge with some gilt still remaining. A scarce badge to find.

It is interesting to note that both British & US Interpreters also wore a similar badge, both in a small size and one slightly larger, either on their caps or, in the British case upon their sleeve
