The North West Canada Medal, A British campaign medal established in September 1885 to reward military personnel, volunteers, and the North-West Mounted Police who helped suppress the North-West Rebellion in 1885. A total of only 5,650 medals were issued, primarily to Canadian local forces and attached British staff officers.
The medal design.
Obverse: Features the diademed and veiled head of Queen Victoria, designed by L.C. Wyon, with the legend Victoria Regina Et Imperatrix. Reverse: Displays the words North West 1885 Canada encircled by a maple leaf wreath.
Ribbon & Clasps: A blue-grey ribbon with a red stripe at each edge. Some recipients also earned the Saskatchewan clasp for taking part in specific combat engagements.Naming: The medals were issued unnamed, though many were later privately or officially engraved with the recipient's name and regiment.
Compensation: In addition to the medal, most veterans of the campaign received a grant of 320 acres of land or a scrip for $80.
