Born in 1810 ,Cork , Ireland. Fitzgerald enlisted for "Unlimited Service" with the Bombay Artillery in 1830. Noted previous occupation as a Clerk. Discharged 19th December 1843 and returned to Europe.
The British Scinde Medal 1843, awarded by the Honourable East India Company to British and Indian troops. It commemorates the successful Scinde campaign led by Sir Charles Napier, which resulted in the annexation of Sindh into the British Empire.
Design and VariationsThe 37mm medal was designed by renowned engraver William Wyon.Obverse: Features the bust of Queen Victoria facing left. Reverse: Features a laurel wreath surmounted by a crown, with one of three reverse texts indicating the battles the recipient fought in MEEANEE (For the Battle of Miani on Feb 17, 1843), HYDERABAD (For the Battle of Hyderabad on Mar 24, 1843), MEEANEE / HYDERABAD (For participating in both battles).
The medals were officially impressed or engraved with the recipient’s name, rank, and regiment along the rim.Suspension: It is typically fitted with a straight "German Silver" bar suspension similar to the China 1842 medal.
The campaign was sparked by skirmishes and raids on British convoys between India and Afghanistan. Napier's force of roughly 2,800 troops famously defeated a Baloch army over ten times their size at Meeanee.
