US WW2 An Original USAAF A2 Flying Jacket.

An original United States Army Air Force A2 Flying Jacket.

This jacket was made as part of contract W535 AC-27752 which was awarded to Rough Wear clothing company. Contract W535 AC-27752 was amilitary contract for the US Army Air Forces Type A-2 leather flight jacket. Awarded to the Rough Wear Clothing Co. on April 27, 1942, it called for the production of 50,000 jackets, making it Rough Wear's final and one of their most iconic A-2 contracts. It is made from a brown coloured goatskin that has survived extremely well.

The jacket retains its original 'Talon' branded zipper that can still be fastened with care. Underneath the collar the original metal hook and eye are still present as are the press studs which allow the collar to be fastened to the body of the jacket. Two patch pockets are located to the front which also fasten with the same style of press studs. Brown painted metal grommets are fitted under each arm to allow for ventilation. There is a very worn original painted/ decal USAAF insignia to the left shoulder.

The jacket has its original brown wool waistband and cuffs. These all exhibit heavy nothing/ wear but are original to the jacket.

The interior of the jacket is lined with a golden brown coloured cotton as is usually encountered. There is some heavy wear and damage to the lining around the back of the collar through wear. The original label is still present to the neck and is in good condition with all the details still being present. It reads -

TYPE A-2
Drawing No. 30-1415
CONTract NO. W535 AC27752
ROUGH WEAR CLOTHING CO
MIDDLETOWN, PA.

Below this is the size tag which reads '48'. There is also an Army Air Forces ink stamp to the lining.

The jacket is invert good original condition on the whole and displays extremely well. There are a few small flaws which have been highlighted earlier in the description but aside from those the jacket really is very good.

Overall this is a stunning example of an early contract goatskin Rough Wear contract jacket.
