The 187th Infantry Regiment served as part of the 187th Infantry Division (187. Infanterie-Division), which included companion formations like the 189th Infantry Regiment and elements of the XXXIX Reserve Corps.
The regiment and its division saw heavy action on the Eastern Front and participated in the Romanian Campaign. Notable engagements included fighting through mountain passes in Transylvania, such as the Battle of Nagybár in September 1916. Later in the war, the division transitioned to the Western Front to face Allied forces, including operations in sectors opposite the British and French armies.
