Australia WW1 Trench Periscope No 9 Mk II (1915 Dated)
The Periscope No 9 Mk II was issued to British and Australian forces as a trench observation device enabling field observations to be carried out without exposed to artillery, grenade and rifle fire. This model is made from ply timber and is design to fold. It is rectangular in shape and is held together by nails and metal straps. There are two glass mirrors placed at 45 degrees inside the periscope. The periscope is painted its original khaki. In the centre of the back of the periscope are hinges, with a latch at the front. This is to allow the periscope to be folded down. There is a metal border around the bottom edge of the top half of the periscope. At the bottom observation end is a steel parapet stake that can be folded behind the periscope. It is attached to the periscope by a wing nut to secure the periscope into the side of the trench. Above the observation mirror is a paper maker's label with the following text Perescope No. 9 MK II Joseph Darch 1915".
Comes with its original hessian carry bag with shoulder sling. This with overall soiling consummate with age. There is also some damage to the end flap and to the front securing buckle as can be seen and comes containing a spare glass lense.
A fantastic display item of trench warfare.
