The Honour Cross was the first award founded during the Third Reich by Reich President Generalfeldmarschall von Hindenburg in 1934.
The Cross is unofficially known as the Hindenburg Cross.
The Cross was instituted to recognize virtuous and brave acts performed by German citizens throughout the First World War, and in turn cause an increase in national pride.
The Cross was conferred upon veterans of front line combat, non-combat veterans and auxiliary personnel, as well as the next-of-kin of personnel who were killed in action from August 1914 to December 1918.
