German WW1 1918 “Cut Away” Helmet

A very rare example. Shell only, no liner. In what some people might almost say is a relic condition. I think it’s in between. The exterior of the shel have been extensively cleaned back to the base metal leaving the pitting of previous rust. The interior with a similar appearance but retaining a little of some probably post war green paint. There are no marking left to be seen.

The Helm mit Ohrenausschnitten or “ear cutout helmet” was a variation of the German Model 1918. It is identical to the standard M18 but for the half-moon curved sections adjacent to the location of the wearer’s ears. The purpose of the cutouts was to improve hearing, not as was commonly believed, to accommodate headphones for telegraph and radio operators. Nor were these helmets intended as specialty headgear for cavalry troops. Most of these helmet seeing use in the post war Friekorps and Reichswehr as well as being used by the Afghanistan army in the 1930’s.

This is a rare original shell, most of the ones you see advertised for sale are fakes. A rare chance to obtain the almost unobtainable.
